A truly rare musical encounter awaits when Midori Takada and Jakob Bro take to the stage together at Roskilde Festival this summer. Here, they will unveil the unique sonic universe that makes up their joint album あなたに出会うまで / Until I Met You, released in 2025, which is the first part of an album trilogy recorded in Tokyo.
Delicate melodies, meditative percussion and dreamy textures intertwine in a collaboration that cultivates acoustic soundscapes using piano, percussion and acoustic guitar. A kind of acoustic ambient, yet also an expression that defies conventional norms and resonates like an intimate musical dialogue between two individuals.
Over the course of her career spanning more than forty years, Midori Takada has established herself as a deeply distinctive percussionist. Her magnum opus is the quiet revolution that is the album Through The Looking Glass (1983). Here, Takada weaves traditional Japanese and African percussion techniques into a modern ambient sound, in the same artistic vein as contemporary works by Brian Eno, Jon Hassell and Don Cherry, yet with a truly personal tone. When the album was re-released in 2017, it was hailed as a pioneering masterpiece, sparking a great deal of renewed interest in Takada.
In 2022, the collaboration with the acclaimed Danish guitarist Jakob Bro began when the two met to create improvised music at the Pierre Boulez Saal in Berlin. Jakob Bro has made a name for himself in particular as one of Europe’s leading jazz guitarists, having collaborated with the likes of Lee Konitz, Bill Frisell and Tomasz Stańko, and having released acclaimed albums on labels including ECM. However, the collaboration with Takada demonstrates that Bro’s ability to create both minimalist and exploratory soundscapes extends far beyond jazz and deep into a spiritual vein, which will be on display at Roskilde Festival when Takada and Bro perform together.
