A transcendent musical experience awaits as the remarkable Egyptian poet and vocalist Abdullah Miniawy brings his trio to Roskilde Festival. Here, Miniawy’s roots in Arabic poetry and Egyptian music are brought into dialogue with jazzy improvisations, hypnotic minimalism and electronic elements in wide-ranging compositions.
As early as 2023, Abdullah Miniawy garnered widespread acclaim for his fusion of jazz, experimental music and Egyptian traditions with the project Le Cri du Caire, which Songlines magazine described as “haunting and spiritually rich”. Material from Le Cri du Caire is also developed into new sonic structures in Abdullah Miniawy’s trio with the two French trombonists Jules Regard and Jules Boittin.
The music they create together alternates between contemplation, deep spirituality and the expressively theatrical, drawing inspiration from the cacophonous street noise of Egyptian cities, Baroque music, opera, and themes from Coptic Christianity and Sufi mysticism. It is all elevated by Abdullah Miniawy’s unique vocals, which blend spoken-word poetry, vocal improvisations and traditional Arabic vocal traditions.
The result is unlike anything else and, in keeping with the trio’s intention, is truly music that breaks down boundaries and forges new connections between traditions from East and West. The trio has been met with great enthusiasm on a wide range of international stages, and we look forward to experiencing their poetic presence and poignant musical expression at Roskilde Festival.
